The Spot Leiostomus xanthurus
Member of the croaker family. Ranges Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico, most abundant NJ and south. Very similar body structure to the Atlantic Croaker, but much smaller in size, maxing at 12-14 inches. Flat silvery sides, accented with shades of purple along
the back. Distinctive spot just behind the gills. Ranging from fresh to
salt water, often fishable in the local lagoons in the Great Bay, NJ area during late August/September.
Primary use at this time is as a baitfish to catch stripers or weakfish.
Bloodworms cut into small pieces are an excellent bait for spots.
Edible - considered both food and gamefish. The Spot is considered panfish.
