Sharksucker
Echeneis naucrates Color varies, but this fish has a broad
dark stripe at midside, offset above and below by pale bands, the pale
bands becoming very narrow on the adults (ours unfortunately lost a lot
of color before we got the chance to take the picture). A member of the
remouras, family Echeneididae, all of which are distinguished by the sucking
disk on the top of the head. They attach themselves to sharks, turtles
and larger fish. They then feed on parasites, small fish, and scraps of
fish left behind by their hosts. They have no food value. They can grow
as large as 3 ft. The one above measured about 18". |
